The Appeal

Some cars really don’t need our words to explain them. Their photos give you everything you need. This 1960 Giulietta Spider is just such a car.
Peruse the photos, and you will quickly see that this is, if not the best, certainly one of the best Giulietta Spiders currently on the market anywhere. A bold claim, perhaps, but backed by those images. It has been recently subject to a genuine ‘nut and bolt’ restoration using a huge list of parts from Classic Alfa and displays today at collector-level quality. But perhaps it is the level of detail that truly impresses - look closely and you will see correct stickers and ancillaries in the engine bay, even a leather-bound tool roll with leather retaining straps in the boot.
The restoration of this car has clearly been a labour of love for the current keeper and the craftspeople involved. It has been undertaken since the car arrived in the UK from the USA in 2021 and recently completed.
With few miles covered since then, this is a vanishingly rare opportunity to acquire one of the very best examples of these exquisitely beautiful cars that we have seen in a long while.

  • 84,083 miles showing on MOT test and now showing 84,166 miles in photos

The Condition

  • Restored in classic white to an exceptionally high standard as shown in photos
  • Described as ‘museum-quality’ by seller and ‘one of the best in the world’
  • We are also told there is ‘zero rust and no pitting’
  • We find it hard to argue with this assessment based on the photos
  • Carefully detailed and factory correct finish as shown in photos
  • Panels primed and zinc coated including inner channels and frames
  • Waxoyl injected panels to preserve condition
  • Underside in excellent condition with no underseal added to show integrity of structure
  • Fully re-chromed exterior and interior brightwork
  • Exterior fittings refurbished, including wheels, lights and other fittings
  • Black mohair roof in very good order with deep colour and clear screens
  • Red leather interior in beautiful condition with restoration-fresh finish
  • All electrics reported to work correctly
  • Beautifully detailed car including three-spoke wheel, engine bay and tool roll
There is really little we can add in words that the photos of this car don’t already eloquently express. It is, in a nutshell, magnificent. We haven’t seen a finer example of these beautiful cars in a long time.
What sets a very high end restoration apart is the attention to detail. It is easy to make a car look shiny and fresh, much harder to undertake the depth of work that sets a good quality job apart. Here we have one. The original panels have been retained but fully refurbished before being primed, zinc coated and repainted. This included the inner channels and frames. Each panel has also been WaxOyl injected. The current keeper has resisted undersealing the car to ensure the quality of the work and the integrity of the structure is visible for buyers.
Inside the story continues with an exquisitely detailed cabin finished in lustrous red leather. This car is a reminder of just how good the restorer’s art can be and a wonderful design object.

The Mechanics

  • 1.3-litre (1,290cc) twin-cam inline-four Alfa Romeo engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Full ‘nut and bolt’ mechanical and running gear rebuild
  • Extensive list of parts purchased and fitted shown in photos
  • Said to start instantly and run very well
  • We are told all components were stripped and refurbished throughout
  • This included oil seals, gaskets and bearings
  • Fitted with reliable electronic ignition but otherwise factory standard
  • No reported running or driving issues
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on last MOT
Naturally the mechanicals and running gear of this car are a match for the condition of the bodywork and interior. The vendor tells us that all components were stripped and refurbished and, where necessary, new parts sourced and fitted. The car is factory standard except for the useful addition of electronic ignition.
The result is a car that likely runs and drives better than the day it left the factory. Considering just how good these sweet-revving 1.3L cars are, that is great news.
