1840cc Stage III Holbay powerplant with 4-speed overdrive transmission
In the same family for the last 30 years
The Appeal
Introduced at The Earls Court Motor Show in October 1961, the Harrington Le Mans was so-called after the company won 'The Index of Thermal Efficiency' Trophy at the illustrious event. The Harrington was already one of the most exclusive cars in Sunbeam's product range, but the Le Mans demanded something special to differentiate it - introducing some of the boldest bodywork Rootes ever put their hands on.
Only 250 of them were built, half of which went to the USA. This particular Sunbeam Harrington Le Mans was one of the last cars built, and was first registered in the UK - with a comprehensive restoration completing in around 1989. It's a well-known vehicle in Sunbeam circles for its 1840cc Stage III Holbay powerplant, with two twin-choke Weber carburettors giving 140bhp.
Of particular curiosity is that, as a result, it was one of the last engines overhauled by John Read (founder of Holbay Engineering) before a tragic aircraft accident.
This particular vehicle has been in the same family since restoration, and still looks in fine fettle. Beyond being an exceptionally rare classic, its unique provenance and that impressive Holbay engine are both bound to attract plenty of attention from enthusiasts.
