The Appeal
Mercedes-Benz owes its post-war revival to the Ponton model, and when it came time to design a replacement, engineers had more substantial resources to invest in development. For the W111, Mercedes focused on passenger safety, comfort and contemporary styling; integrating 'warp zones' into the design, patenting retractable seatbelts and entrusting Friedrich Geiger (creator of the 300 SL 'Gullwing') with the styling. As expected, the results were impressive and the W111 remained in production until 1971.
