The Appeal
Following the success of the large Neue Klasse saloons launched at the beginning of the 1960s, BMW gained a reputation as a manufacturer of prestigious saloons with a sporting character, well-finished and with excellent performance, distinguished and understated but with a brilliant drive.
In order to extend the range and increase sales, the 1602 was introduced from 1966, a compact, agile two-door with a satisfying ride, based on a chassis similar to that of the top-of-the-range saloons, with independent rear suspension and disc brakes at the front, equipped with a 1.6-litre version of the famous M10 engine with 85 hp.
Starting in 1971, the two-door version was joined by the BMW E6, better known as the 02 Touring, a three-door hatchback or shooting brake with a sleek, aerodynamic line, combining the iconic aggressive front end with an aggressive front section.
aggressive front end of the 2002 with a sloping rear end incorporating a practical tailgate and characteristic round headlights.
Mechanically identical to the 2002, the Touring proved far too innovative for its time and was not a great sales success, being produced in just over 30,000 examples until 1974.
Today, by virtue of its rarity, pleasing and sporty styling and identical performance and driving characteristics to the more popular two-door version, the 02 Touring is increasingly sought after by enthusiasts.
This BMW 1600ti Touring from 1972, in almost entirely original condition, is an example from the first series, with the attractive front grille with chrome trim prior to the 1973 restyling.
It has a well-preserved interior in remarkably good condition, apart from a few cracks in the driver's seat, an original radio and an aftermarket tachometer mounted in the centre console, an efficient dashboard with no visible defects, a clean and undamaged headlining, and carpets and mats in good condition in the cabin and luggage compartment.
The seller assures us that the bodywork is solid and free of rust, but the original paintwork has a few flaws due to age and weathering, with some imperfections evident especially on the right side of the roof and tailgate and on the top of the right door. The rest of the bodywork is mostly intact and in good condition, with bright chrome, clear headlights and nice vintage alloy wheels.
The 1573 cm3 M116 engine has been upgraded in the past with the addition of two double-bodied carburettors and more powerful exhaust and intake manifolds, giving it more liveliness and a very pleasant sporty sound. All original components have been retained and will be delivered with the car.
The seller informs us that the rest of the mechanics are efficient and that this car has always been maintained with the utmost care by its previous, passionate owner who has owned it for a long time.
Rare, original and with a line of great charm, BMW 02 Touring cars are much more appreciated today than they were in the 1970s, when their innovative and intelligent bodywork, at once practical and sporty, was not fully understood by the public and they see constantly rising prices. This well-preserved and highly original example is an interesting opportunity to acquire a practical and versatile historic car that offers an exciting driving experience.
