One of only 860 built with an automatic transmission
Factory air conditioning
The Appeal
Every now and then, German automakers build something simply to prove just how good their engineers are. It seems that's what BMW had in mind with the E9. It boasts all of BMW’s classic signature design features including the fabled “Hoffmeister Kink” and Bracq’s trademark “shark nose”. The reliable M30 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine produces 180 horsepower in CS trim and the rare automatic gearbox makes this E9 a consummate grand tourer.
In fact, this 1972 3.0-litre CS is one of just 860 with an automatic transmission. It was supplied new to Switzerland, highly specified with options including air conditioning and electric windows. It’s covered a mere 102,000 kilometres which surely makes this among the least-driven E9s in existence.
Imported to the Netherlands in 1998, it’s been cherished by the same collector for the last 25 years, undergoing a significant overhaul in 2023 which brought to the car up to the high standards it boasts today.
The car completed a 4,000-kilometre drive to Romania in the summer of 2023 for a club event, during which it reportedly performed faultlessly.

The Condition
Paintwork in 'Polaris' silver-grey
Blue velour upholstery
Optional electric side windows and electric aerial
Period radio/cassette player in good working condition
This 3.0 CS exudes originality and it’s abundantly clear that a great deal of care and attention have been lavished upon it over the years. Also, this is surely the most iconic colour combination for these cars: 'Polaris' silver-grey over blue velour.
There are very few signs of wear and deterioration to report. The bodywork appears arrow-straight, with crisp swage lines, uniform door shuts and panel gaps well within tolerance. The paint and brightwork presents very well, with no significant blemishes, wear or signs of excessive corrosion to report. The vendor has helpfully put the car on a ramp, so you’re able to easily inspect the underside from the photographs. It looks in very good order.
It’s similarly good news inside too, with barely any wear to the velour seats, copious woodwork and original controls. We detect a small hole in the boot carpet, but otherwise, there’s nothing we’d change.
The vendor assures us that the BMW drives and shifts smoothly, having completed a 4,000 km club drive to Romania in the summer of 2023 without any problems. This trip was undertaken following the extensive work listed above, demonstrating that the car is ready to be enjoyed.
