Highly sought-after 'Oil Klappe' variant - unique to 1972 models
Colour-matched: 'Sepia Brown' on a brown vinyl interior
The Appeal
To optimise the dry sump lubrication system, Porsche introduced an external engine oil filler hole for the 1972 911 models. Although the idea seemed good at the outset, Porsche never envisaged that owners, used to cars with the petrol tank at the rear, would accidentally fill the engine with petrol at the petrol station.
After a flurry of complaints to the after-sales service, Porsche quickly abandoned the idea, but over the years, the eccentric 'Oil Klappe' models have become highly coveted by collectors, in the same way that vintage watch enthusiasts seek out pieces with dial imperfections.
Here is a fully restored 1972 Porsche 911 2.4T Targa, proudly displaying its original 'Sepia Brown' colour. Offered after extensive work and accompanied by an independent technical inspection, as well as a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and photographic record of the restoration. An excellent example.
The History and Paperwork
Originally delivered to the United States on 28 June 1972
Imported to France in unrestored condition in 2015
Freshly and exhaustively restored
464 kilometres indicated - the speedometer was changed on completion of the work - 56,000 miles prior to full restoration
Porsche Certificate of Authenticity present confirming colour matching
Photographic file documenting restoration work
Independent inspection report
French registration documents
Technical inspection valid until December 2024
The original service book and manual are not present, but a thick file of invoices is available from 2015 to the present day. The latest technical inspection only mentions a slight imbalance on the rear brakes due to the fact that the vehicle is not driven very much, but this remains imperceptible when driving.
The car was purchased in 2015 from Historic Motors LLC in Ohio by its current owner. The US (Massachusetts) title is available as well as the 846A which certifies that all taxes had been paid at the time. As soon as it arrived in France, the owner embarked on an almost complete restoration of the car, starting with the completely stripped bodywork. This restoration will be completed in 2023, although the owner has had the car driven and registered in France as a normal carte-grise from 2021. The work will therefore have taken almost 8 years. The work was carried out by the owner himself, and by professionals.
A substantial file of parts invoices accompanies the car. During the restoration, the mileage counter was replaced by an odometer, which shows the mileage since the restoration was completed. The American tilte and the technical inspection at the end of 2022 show the odometer reading in miles, i.e. just under 56,000 miles (information not guaranteed).
The Condition
Repainted in its original 'Sepia Brown' colour (ref.415)
Restored Fuchs wheels fitted
Interior restored to factory specification, including brown vinyl upholstery
Targa roof correctly fitted
Chrome bumpers fitted
No signs of damage or corrosion to body or underbody
Interior appears to be free from any noticeable wear
For classic 911 enthusiasts, this Targa ticks all the right boxes. It retains its original colour, has the precious'Oil Klappe', sits on Fuchs wheels and boasts a remarkably original interior.
Clearly, the restoration work has been carried out to a high standard, emphasising originality while making the interior and exterior equally elegant. Climbing aboard, you're greeted by the iconic layout of the five VDO dials, and we applaud the decision to retain the original steering wheel, which ensures a period-correct driving experience.
There is no noticeable wear or signs of corrosion on the car, and the accompanying inspection report is equally reassuring.
There are no dents or scratches on the bodywork. On the whole, the paintwork has been applied correctly, is tight and shiny. However, there are a few blemishes, particularly on the front wings (small blisters). A Porsche certificate attests that the colour configuration is original.
Overall, the fit and finish are in line with the average for these 911 Classic models. The paintwork on the doorways and under the front and rear bonnets is less sparkling than on the exterior. Most of the chrome, wheel trims and protective rings are original, and therefore show signs of normal wear and tear. The headlights and lights are new. The targa cloth is new. The rims are in good condition. The rear rims are wider than original for a sportier look. The underside, floor and wheel arches are in good condition. The floor is original and shows very little deformation from use.
The overall appearance of the interior is correct, although there is a fine new carpet that fits unevenly in some places. Most of the upholstery is original, including the dashboard, door panels, storage compartments and rear shelves. They therefore show signs of normal wear and tear. The original steering wheel is in very good condition. The owner couldn't find any new brown upholstery, so he had some standard black components tinted. This gives the car a weathered look that is perfectly suited to its style. The car radio is not the original one, but it works correctly. Apart from this element and a few details such as the meter rings and rear wheels, the car is in its original configuration.
Overall, this Porsche looks good. What makes it attractive is undoubtedly its relatively rare configuration. The upholstery on Classic 911s is often black, but this is the original brown, which reinforces the overall aesthetic of the vehicle. This 911 does not claim to be in concours condition, but it does allow you to drive without fear. It is by no means a museum vehicle, so enthusiasts beware!
The Mechanics
2.4-litre air-cooled flat-six, Weber 40 IDA 3C carburettors
Five-speed manual gearbox
Engine compartment in immaculate condition
There's a reason why car enthusiasts love the 911, and it becomes immediately apparent as soon as you get behind the wheel and fire up that thrilling flat-six engine. In its naturally-aspirated, air-cooled 2.4-litre version, this Targa offers a pure, classic 911 driving experience, and we're sure the next owner will find this car most addictive to drive.
The seller assures us that all mechanical components are in good condition and that the car drives exactly as it should:
The car runs very well. The engine starts and revs well. The carburettors were recently cleaned and adjusted. It makes a nice noise because it's fitted with a complete stainless steel line, including the intercoolers. It's very smooth and picks up nicely without jerking. Gears shift smoothly, and the suspension and brakes are in mint condition. There is no noise or vibration when driving. The car is really very pleasant to drive, and thanks to the restoration, it looks as good as new.
As far as the engine is concerned, the 1972 911 TEs have a 911/51 engine type number between 6120001 and 6129000. As is often the case, 911 TEs originally fitted with fuel injection are converted to carburettors, as is the case with this one, which is fitted with two Weber 40 IDA 3C carburettors.
