1972 Triumph GT6 MkIII

Highlights

  • Desirable final ‘kamm tail’ Mk3 car
  • Pretty Saffron Yellow with black sports interior
  • Long MOT to August 2025
  • Recent work to electrics, ignition, clutch and running gear
  • Described as very reliable and starts easily first time
  • Smart example of these popular 6cyl GTs

The Appeal

The GT6 is the sort of car Britain excelled at in the 60s and 70s - a diminutive GT that dialled the style and the fun right up to 11.
The MkIII introduced the revised ‘kamm tail’ styling common to the Spitfire, together with updates to the suspension. But the silky, smooth-revving 2L straight six from the Vitesse remained, imbuing the GT6 with the entertaining ‘mini-E-Type’ driving experience that has kept these cars so popular with enthusiasts.
This car has clearly been cherished. Sparingly used by its current keeper, who bought it 2 years ago, it has been treated to ongoing maintenance. This includes a switch to more reliable electronic ignition - plus new dizzy cap - and replacement clutch master cylinder. The front bearings have been adjusted and the wheels aligned. There is also an uprated oil cooler and filter housing.
This is a very tidy carn across the bodywork and interior. It is reported to be reliable, start easily and drive very well. It is MOT-exempt by age but it is a mark of the seller’s transparency that it was tested prior to sale and carries a long certificate through to the end of August 2025. A stand-out example of a very entertaining sports car.

  • Vitesse 1,998cc 6cyl straight six engine
  • Manual transmission with 4 gears
  • Largely factory-standard MkIII car with updated suspension
  • Upgraded stainless steel exhaust, oil cooler, and filter housing
  • New electronic distributor and clutch master cylinder
  • Front wheel bearings adjusted and wheels realigned
  • Reliable car that starts well and impresses when driving according to seller
  • No reported running or driving issues
  • One minor advisory for running and mechanical gear on current MOT
The vendor tells us:
“The car is fun to drive. It is quick as you would expect from a 2litre engine in such a light car. It hugs the road very well so corners well and it sounds amazing too.
“The driving experience is pretty unique. Because it is low to the ground it hugs the road and is very powerful and responsive. It is also a real head turner set off beautifully in Saffron Yellow and with chrome spoke wheels. My reason for selling is that I am not able to use it as much as it deserves to be used.”
