The Appeal
The French manufacturer, Simca, entered the world of motorsports with the Rallye 2 model in the early 1970s. The car soon became particularly admired for its successes in the Group 2 category. This category allowed manufacturers to modify production vehicles for racing as long as defined production design characteristics were retained. The 1973 Simca 1000 Rallye 2 boasted a compact and lightweight design, lending it the agility needed in racing. Its distinctive look featured bold stripes and dramatically flared wheel arches, affording it a low-profile stance and truly embodying the spirit of a thoroughbred race car.
This car was first prepared in 2014 and has been raced annually since then. For each season the car has benefitted from well-chosen upgrades to make it better and faster. All modifications have remained within the Group 2 homologation rules for the Simca. This process culminated with the little Simca attaining an overall championship win for the 2020 season at the Kampf der Zwerge.

The Condition
The Simca looks amazing in its vibrant orange and grey race livery

The overall condition appears to be excellent as well as eye-catching
This may be a diminutive car, but it certainly punches above its weight in terms of presence and personality. The grey and bright orange colourway is definitely a key part of this, of course. However, the dramatic aerodynamic enhancements to this little car help lift it to another level.
Although these are key to creating a stable and predictable track performer, they also look amazing. The extravagantly flared wheel arches provide space for the wide Compomotive race alloys and accompanying tyres. The deep chin spoiler works in conjunction with the pronounced boot spoiler to maximise mechanical grip and minimise speed related lift. The large, free-flowing, outboard mounted silencer provides the icing on this thrilling looking cake.
The external condition appears to be excellent considering the competitive cut and thrust of the type of sprint races in which the Simca excels. Clearly any racing scrapes or scuffs have been diligently and expertly addressed to result in the impressive presentation we see today.
The interior is stripped out in true, focussed race car style
Rather than road orientated comforts, light weight and safety are the focus of the cabin
A full safety cage from 2021 and accredited race seat, belts and mountings are present
Not too much of the Simca’s original cabin fittings remain with everything done to reduce weight as well as incorporate all the Group 2 required safety devices. The supportive racing seat, seatbelts, seatbelt mountings and full safety cage were fitted in 2021. This ensures that a number of accredited years remain for these, making the little Simca ready and able to race.
Additional to these features are the expected and required plumbed in fire suppression system, and engine and electrical cut offs. An Alcantara trimmed racing steering wheel sits ahead of a focussed binnacle of race instruments, warning lights and externally mounted fuses. The front luggage compartment of the Simca is now home to a 60L aluminium fuel cell, oil cooler and radiator. The latter were both fitted in 2021.
The Mechanics
This Simca is fitted with a 1,294cc four cylinder modified race engine

As you might expect from a proven race winner of this nature, the Simca boasts an impressive mechanical specification. The 1,294cc four-cylinder engine is fitted with forged pistons, a fast steel camshaft with double springs working against bigger valves. Double 45 DCOE Weber carburettors are fitted. A Lumenition, high-performance ignition system is present as is a special toothed belt driving the water pump.
The rebuilt gearbox is a 1000 Tours box (Rallye 3) with mechanical limited slip differential and a 9x31 crown and pinion (Rallye 3). The car is fitted with high-performance disk brakes on all round as well as Ferodo racing brake pads. The suspension is courtesy of Gaz coil overs both front and rear.
Summary
Classic competition cars, whilst increasingly sought after, aren’t especially rare. Classic competition cars with a proven record of significant race wins certainly are, however. To come across a recent championship winner from the prestigious Kampf der Zwerge sprint series will be a delight for those in the know and an opportunity not to be missed.
