Incorporates several choice period-correct upgrades including stainless rims, spokes and exhaust
Fitted with modern electronic ignition to aid starting and smooth running
Mechanical refresh carried out by the vendor
Presented in smart, usable condition with no signs of notable wear
The Appeal
With their flat-twin four-stroke engines, five-speed gearboxes and shaft drive, BMW’s R100 models were leagues ahead of the competition. Today, these bikes are some of the few half-century-old machines still capable of comfortable long-distance touring and even daily riding.
This 1977 R100S incorporates several sensible upgrades while maintaining its original appearance and character. The previous keeper had performed regular servicing, but, due to ill health, the bike remained unridden for some time. Therefore, the vendor has carried out a mechanical refresh, ensuring it’s running and riding well. The BMW is ready to use without road tax or MOT required, making it a very appealing proposition.
The History and Paperwork
Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
UK-supplied
Six former registered keepers
When the vendor purchased the bike, it had been confined to a garage for nearly twenty years although the previous owner had performed regular servicing
The service book is present but it remains unstamped
The vendor supplies a selection of old MOT certificates from the 1970s and ‘80s and most recently 2018 as well as some older invoices
The Condition
Original and smart for a motorcycle of this vintage
Stainless steel rims and spokes fitted during previous ownership
The frame shows age-commensurate wear, with touched-in paint work but no structural damage or corrosion apparent
The paint and plastic are in very good condition for an unrestored bike
The vendor advises that the inside of the fairing has been painted red at some point which is evident upon very close examination
The BMW dash clock is present but non-functional
The original BMW hard case plastic touring panniers are present and in good condition inside and out
The seat upholstery presents well with minimal signs of wear
The grips and foot pegs show some signs of wear commensurate with age but remain eminently usable
The Mechanics
980 cc four-stroke flat-twin
Five-speed gearbox
'S' model with 40 mm Bing carburettors fitted
Shaft drive
Stainless steel exhaust system fitted
Equipped with electronic ignition - the only mechanical upgrade/modification according to the vendor
Due to lack of use prior to the vendor’s purchase, many of the engine seals and gaskets were dried out, in particular the push rod seals and sump - these have been replaced along with a new timing chain and one cam follower which was showing signs of minor pitting
The front brake hoses have been replaced however it retains the original master cylinder mounted under the tank
The vendor reports that the brakes are not especially effective - suggesting the master cylinder be replaced with a bar-mounted item along with the fitment of new pads
We’re advised that the forks are slightly clunky and would be next on the list for a service
The engine reportedly starts on the button and rides well
The gear change is reportedly smooth, the engine runs well and the shaft drive operates correctly
