The Attractions
Italian tax legislation stipulated that cars with an engine capacity above two litres were subject to a hefty 38 per cent VAT on purchase, driving many potential buyers away from models they could otherwise afford. This prompted the major Italian car manufacturers to look for a way around the rules, producing smaller capacity versions of their high-end supercars, sports cars and GTs.
This period saw the birth of the Maserati Merak and the Lamborghini Urraco with two-litre engines, the Alfa Romeo GTV6 and many other models designed to enjoy lower taxation. Maranello also adapted, producing what is probably the most remarkable car of this entire sports car generation: a 2.0-litre V8-engined version of the Dino GT4, christened '208' by Ferrari.
To date, the 208 GT4's engine is the smallest V8 ever adopted by a mass-produced car.
This compact miracle of engineering is part of the Dino 'V' configuration engine family, the original design of which is attributed to Enzo Ferrari's son, who worked on it shortly before his untimely death in 1956. The GT4 is made even more unique by its being a 2+2 GT, despite its rear mid-engined configuration. No wonder Ferrari deemed this car worthy of sporting the prancing horse, an honour never bestowed on the previous Dino 206/246, despite it being a highly successful and popular model.
This 1980 example is one of the last produced and is in admirably original condition. A full service was carried out in 2021 at Officina Ferrari and the carburettors were recently overhauled. The car has overhaul valid until 2025 and the seller assures us that it is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
