The Attractions
Italian coachbuilder Rayton-Fissore took inspiration from what Land Rover had achieved with the epoch-making Range Rover and decided to offer its own version. The result was the Magnum, smaller but no less luxurious.
Based on reliable Iveco mechanicals and available with a wide range of diesel and petrol engines, the Magnum was initially proposed as a spartan military vehicle. Designed by Tom Tjaarda, designer of the De Tomaso Pantera, the Magnum found fertile ground in the USA, where it was marketed under the LaForza brand, and was sold in some 6,000 units.
Of these, only 1,000 were equipped with the 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine like this example. Its fibreglass bodywork reveals it to be an even rarer and more unusual car - one of the rare pre-series models.
In 2018, it was repainted in a flashy yellow colour scheme, which we have been told matches the original. There is room for cosmetic improvements inside and out, but it will be sold with a new Overhaul, which will attest to its good structural condition.
The Magnum is certainly one of the rarest and most unusual 4x4s ever, and this is a particularly rare version. Needing only a little light maintenance and some care, it is a very versatile and interesting modern classic.
