The Appeal
For the designers at Fiat, the lure of creating a new ‘spider’ must have seemed irresistible. After all, the firm had gifted the world a run of brilliant drop tops, all designed for real-world motoring but with a healthy dash of Italian charm.
The new, simply-named Barchetta was a fitting addition to the lineage. It mixed beautiful styling with robust mechanicals and running gear that made it as easy to own as it was easy on the eye. It was fun too, thanks to a peppy 132bhp 1.8L powerplant. A light facelift in 2003 improved the cars built in the final two years of production.
This is one of the last of those facelift cars, finished in classic ‘racing red’ and first registered in Italy. It arrived in Poland in 2015 and has remained with the same, enthusiastic keeper ever since.
The mileage is a mere 87,000kms and is supported by impressive maintenance records. The timing belt and VVT variator were replaced at 82,000kms and the rear shocks earlier this year. It is said to run smoothly with no faults, a point underlined by the recent technical inspection.
This car belies its 19 years with very tidy paintwork - recently refreshed - and a smart leather interior. It is ready to use and enjoy.
