Description
Open air motoring had always been pivotal in Alfa Romeo’s heritage. Spiders were first offered in 1910 when the firm was founded and later in 1950 when mass production facilities were constructed. Tipo 102. 04 was unveiled in 1958 as a Spider version of Tipo 102 2000 Berlina, the successor of 1900 which was Alfa Romeo's first production line left hand drive model. The steel monocoque body was constructed by Carrozzeria Touring under Felice Bianchi Anerloni’s supervision and penned by Federico Formenti’s exceptional interplay of grace and sportmanship. The engine was an enlarged version of the Orazio Satta Puliga's 4-in line DOHC fitted to the 1900 to win several competitions including Targa Florio and Stella Alpina. Spider-exclusive upgraded valve actuation system, dual side draft carburation and raised compression ratio ensured thrilling open air touring in exclusive Italian coachwork as part of the Alfa Romeo experience.
Chassis 01163 was produced in December of 1959 with optional hardtop, delivered to New York in March of 1960 and eventually registered in Michigan in May of 1968. Forty eight years later it was discovered in Michigan under the same ownership and registration. A 4-year long restoration was then undertaken that entailed proper body-off coachwork, complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes. Once complete the body and hardtop were finished in most elegant Alba shade of Grigio and the interior was trimmed in Rosso leather. With only 100 mi since, this exceptional, matching numbers Spider is offered with Museo Storico Certificate of Origin, a comprehensive restoration file, copy of 1968 US Title and FHVA/ FIVA registration.
