Description

Offered here is a remarkable representation of the famous and successful, Works Morris Mini Cooper S, that dominated the rally world in the 1960s. This car was actually driven by none-other than Paddy Hopkirk himself at Deja Vu Donagh Day, and also Rauno Aaltonen at Deja Vu North West.

This Mini Cooper S was extensively restored by Mr Graham McConnell in Northern Ireland, to transform it into a highly accurate evocation of the original 1960s Works Cooper S. The body was restored to an outstanding quality in the Red and White Works colours and was fitted with the Works-type black arches, allowing for the wider wheels and tyres. A spot lamp was fitted to the roof, along with 4 Lucas spot lamps fitted to the front panel Works style. It is fitted with a set of mini lite style alloy wheels, with the period correct Dunlop SP spot tyres.

The A-series 1293cc engine was tuned to the original 1966 specification and was fitted with twin H4 1. 5′ SU carburettors, a three branch exhaust manifold and a centre mounted RC40 exhaust system. An oil filter has been fitted below the dynamo. The gearbox is a straight close ratio 4-speed, with the Cooper S remote change. A works sump guard has been fitted to protect the underside too.

The interior was converted to an exact replica of that of the Monte Carlo Works Minis of the 1960s, featuring the twin dash with the clutter of gauges and switches on the drivers side, and on the navigators dash is a twin trip Halda of the period, and Avanti map light. There are switches that operate the roof spot lamp, horn and reversing spot lamp. In the passenger door there are backup switches, a second Avanti map light and padding to protect the navigators legs. It is fitted with a period John Ally roll bar, Works bucket seats with 3-point Britax competition seatbelts and a 15′ adonized Moto-Lita steering wheel.

Additionally, there are also a number of very rare rally accessories included with the Mini including, Esso and Dunlop maps from the period, gerry bags for water and petrol, a Helphos rally search light, quick lift mechanical jacks, bulbs and spare fan belts. However, the true 1960s rally driving experience wouldn’t be complete without some packets of period cigarettes and matches within the dashboard.

The car is owned by Dr. Beatty Crawford, a retired Consultant Radiologist and avid rallyer. He has co-driven for virtually every top Irish driver
in the 60s and early 70s, such as Adrian and Derek Boyd, Billy Coleman, Cathal Curley and Ronnie and Dessie McCartney. He took a hiatus when he spent 35 years
working in the USA and later in life he co-drove for Andrew Cowan, Jimmy McRae and five world rally champions, Walter Rohrl, Stig Blomqvist,
Bjorn Waldegard, Louise Aitken-Walker and Sandro Munari.

This stunning recreation of such an iconic car in the rallying world truly recreates the experience of 1960s rallying excellently, and is a sensational tribute to the legends that conquered the formidable rally stages of the 60s and 70s.
