Representing a major step forward in the development of Porsche's perennial 911, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 ('Type 964' in factory parlance) had been launched in 1989, the former marking the first time that four-wheel drive had been seen on a series-production model. Face-lifted but retaining that familiar shape, the newcomers had been given a more extensive work-over mechanically, 87% of parts being claimed as entirely new. The pair shared the same 3. 6-litre, 250bhp, air-cooled flat-six engine, while power-assisted steering (another 911 'first'), anti-lock brakes and a five-speed manual transmission were standard on both, with the Tiptronic auto 'box a Carrera 2-only option. Its new engine enabled the 964 to out-perform the old '3. 2' yet still meet the latest emissions regulations, top speed increasing to 260km/ h with 100km/ h attainable in 5. 4 seconds.
It is important to note that the WTL package was not merely confined to cosmetic aspects but also included the suspension, wider track, larger brakes and 17" wheels from the Type 964 Turbo models. The 964 Cabriolet WTL's remained in production for just 2 years (1992-1993) with a total of just 1, 199 examples for the European market. In the last year of production (1993) just 296 examples were built of which 197 were delivered with manual gearbox we've been advised, making the example offered here a rarity indeed.
This particular example, completed on 8th April 1993, was delivered new in the Netherlands and left the factory finished in desirable Midnight Blue Metallic with Pearl White leather interior from Porsche Exclusive, probably a unique colour scheme for the model. We have been advised only 19 examples of the 964 WTL Cabriolet were delivered new to the Netherlands (Country code C20) over both production years, making this example ultra-rare indeed. It was equipped with the five-speed manual transmission preferred by most enthusiasts. Prior to delivery to its first owner the car resided with 'Porsche Exclusive' for individualising, being fitted with the so-called 'Z-options' (Zusätz-auftrage). The different clocks and switches have also been leather-stitched.
The car comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity listing its generous inventory of optional equipment. This list is far too lengthy to reproduce here; suffice to say that specification highlights include the following: heated seats in soft leather; headlamp washer; original Blaupunkt Symphony RDS radio/ cassette with amplifier; 17" Cup aluminium wheels; on-board computer; electrically adjustable seats; electric soft-top; front airbags; air conditioning; power steering; rear seats in draped leather; leather dashboard and door panels.
The 964 WTL moved subsequently to Belgium. Its mileage history is traceable via its Belgian car-pass from 2004, and is also accompanied by its original service book and extensive service history. The most recent service was carried out by Porsche Zentrum Bensberg in September 2023 at 107, 491 kilometres, while the current odometer reading is just under 108, 000 kilometres so the car has hardly been driven since the service. Clearly meticulously maintained, highly original (all original stickers still in place) and presented in excellent condition, this beautiful and sought-after WTL Cabriolet is offered with 3 original keys, two tonneau covers (one in Pearl White leather), Belgian registration documents.
