Description

Speedbroker are proud to offer this stunning example of the rare Ford Cortina MK2 1600 GT Crayford Convertible in beautiful Ermine White. Having been with one owner for the past 50 years it has been meticulously maintained and loved (and always garaged) by it's current custodian, and presents in excellent condition for its age and provenance. The current owner purchased it from the car's first owner, and has enjoyed taking it to many car shows over the years, with these shows really being it's main outings.

The Cortina needs little introduction. Becoming the staple of British motoring, and the best selling car of the 1970s, it became a poster child for Ford, and in many ways changed the landscape for the wonder, range and flexibility of the modern motor car.

Designed by Roy Haynes and launched at the London motor show on the 18th October 1966, the MK2 was an instant hit and had something for everyone with trim levels and boot badges becoming a game of top trumps. Among them, the wonderful 1600 GT on which this car was based.

Across the hall, another company had brought along an all new Cortina - Crayford Auto Developments, based in Westerham, and owned by Jeffrey Smith and David McMullan the renowned coachbuilders specialising in the expert conversion of vehicles to convertibles. Following their work on the MK1 Cortina, they were given a body shell via Ford’s Terry Beckett, and in total secrecy developed the MK2, working around the clock to complete for the motor show unveiling.

Offered as brand new vehicles direct from Ford dealers, production capacity at Crayford was limited to just 10 vehicles a week, meaning not only was the vehicle in demand, but also produced in very limited numbers.

And now to this beautiful car.

WOT 317H, an Ermine white 1600GT with biscuit interior was supplied via Oakley's Motor Services in Alton on 21st July 1970. In 1973, Its first owner found himself having to repair the car after a knock, but was unable to pay for the repairs.

Step in the current custodian. An experienced painter and repairer who bought the vehicle, and set in motion a 50 year love affair.

The car was fixed, fully painted and spent the next 5 decades being pampered, garaged and wanting for nothing, coming out for weekend drives, car shows and the occasional wedding.
