Peugeot's 202 time line - The 202 was launched in 1939, representing the revival of the Sochaux firm to Peugeot’s latest and stylish design, with inverted quarter elliptics at the rear and independent front suspension. The idea was to compete with Citroen’s Traction Avant with a lighter streamline model to replace the Peugeot 201. The new 1, 133 cc engine had a 3-bearing crankshaft, with worm final drive and a three speed synchromesh gearbox. The specification included this 4-door saloon, a 4-door cabriolet, and a 2-door drophead coupe. Included with the 4-door saloon here is a sliding sunshine roof and rear window blind to deflect following headlamp glare from distracting the driver. The design was a scaled down version of the Peugeot 402, some 62, 773 versions of the 202 produced in 8’ 6” wheelbase form and capable of around 63mph or 100kph. These were the first of the company’s aerodynamic cars, distinguished by the Fiat ‘Beetle’ like bonnet with the headlamps and battery housed between the radiator and grille.
The Peugeot 202 marked the revival of the Sochaux firm. It was born to compete with the famous Traction Citroën. Its line is inspired by the famous 402, and is part of an aerodynamic style typical of the "spindle" era - this represented the Peugeot style concept of ‘Fuseau Sochaux ‘streamlining in vogue in Europe in the late 1930s.
