Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The October Online Timed Auction on Thursday the 31st of October, Online. Background:
The MG B is the British sportscar manufacturer’s most successful and longest-lived model, with well over 500, 000 examples leaving the production lines in Abingdon (and in CKD form in Australia) over a life-span of 27 years. It remains one of the UK’s favourite classic cars, combining style with enough performance and modernity to keep up with modern traffic.
Replacing the MGA, the B was launched in 1962 as a two-seater soft top sports car, powered by a 1. 8-litre version of the B Series engine used in the MG A, producing a handy 95hp which was enough to allow the sporting owner to dash from 0-60mph in 11 seconds.
Larger, faster and more comfortable than its predecessor - and with improved road manners - the MG B was welcomed by sportscar enthusiasts and journalists alike and was a strong seller right from the start. That appeal has lasted through the ensuing 60-plus years, with the simple yet efficient and character-filled roadster still engendering long lasting loyalty from MG aficionados and classic car drivers the world over. Throw in 60 years of expert knowledge, almost unrivalled parts availability and eminent tuneability - not to mention that distinctive exhaust rasp - and it’s not hard to see why everyone loves a B.
The car:
Nicknamed 'Nell', this Old English White 1972 convertible has been owned exclusively by enthusiasts who have cared for her over the years, one of whom acted as custodian for 35 years.
The car has a wonderful history file with every MOT Certificate back to 1973, meaning the mileage is authentic and beyond reproach. A thick invoice file is also present which perfectly illustrates the no-nonsense maintenance schedule.
Five years ago, Nell received a new hood and was treated to a full respray in Old English White three years ago. A heater matrix and battery are more recent additions with most of the work having been carried out by Cotswold Classic Car Restorations. The shell is extremely solid with the body excellent underneath. She is on the button and requires nothing – just fold the hood down and enjoy.
Summary:
Loved and enjoyed as every MG B deserves to be, Nell will put a smile on the face of her new owner every time the key is turned in the ignition.
