The origins of the Alfa Romeo Montreal

The Alfa Romeo Montreal, an iconic model from the Italian brand, made its debut at the 1967 World Expo in Montreal, Canada. It was a concept car that made such a strong impression that Alfa Romeo decided to put the model into production. The first production version rolled off the line in 1970. The Montreal quickly earned praise for its futuristic design and powerful performance, and since then, the model has achieved cult status among car enthusiasts.

The interior of the 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal

Step inside a 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal, and you are immediately surrounded by luxury and craftsmanship. This particular Montreal, produced on June 29, 1973, features a black leather interior that has been carefully restored. The leather interior is in pristine condition, with seats that provide both comfort and support, upholstered in high-quality leather that was completely renewed in 2017 for over €5, 000. The dashboard is a showcase of Italian design, combining functional instruments with elegant lines. Every detail, from the steering wheel to the switches, exudes a classic charm that takes you back to the glory days of the 1970s.

The engine and engine bay of the 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal

Under the hood of the Alfa Romeo Montreal lies a technical masterpiece. The car is powered by a robust 2. 6-liter V8 engine, originally designed for Alfa Romeo's race cars. This V8 is derived from the engine that Alfa Romeo used in their Tipo 33 sports cars, delivering an exhilarating driving experience. In 2015, a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration of this Montreal began, during which the engine and gearbox were fully overhauled. This restoration, which lasted until 2020, cost more than €50, 000 and ensured that the engine and all mechanical components were brought back to top condition. The engine bay itself is a testament to precision and care, with every hose, cable, and component in mint condition.

Restoration and provenance

This Montreal was originally delivered new in Germany and came to the Netherlands on November 17, 1981, where it has since been owned by various enthusiasts. The restoration, which took place between 2015 and 2020, was extremely thorough. Every inch of the car was addressed, including a complete restoration of the bodywork and the respraying of both the interior and exterior, which cost €10, 000 at the time. The wheels were also restored to like-new condition and fitted with new Pirelli Cinturato tires (205/ 70/ 15), with a total cost of €3, 400.
In addition to the visible work, numerous technical improvements were made. For example, the crankshaft seal was last adjusted on April 9, 2024, and a modification was made to the air screw, further improving the reliability and performance of the engine.

Documentation and extras

This beautifully restored Montreal comes with an extensive documentation package. This includes the original handbook, a detailed report with restoration photos, and the Alfa Romeo price list from the 1970s. This documentation offers valuable insight into the car's history and restoration process, further emphasizing the value and authenticity of this classic Alfa Romeo.
