In 1967, the Universal Exhibition was held in Montreal, Canada. Alfa Romeo was chosen by the organizers to present an exclusive concept car for the event, bringing the best in automobile science and technology.[1] The company trusted Orazio Satta Puliga and Giuseppe Busso to create the car. The structure of the 1963 Giulia Sprint GT was used, and the design was carried out by Bertone, with designer Marcello Gandini.
At first, there was no intention of producing Montreal commercially, collecting the prototypes after the end of the Exhibition. However, the car had such an impact that studies for the launch of the coupe began, and the final model was presented at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, with the official name Montreal.[1]
Some changes occurred between prototypes and the launched model, especially in the engine. The Type 33 Stradale V8 engine was retained, but the displacement increased from 2 to 2. 6L. Montreal was much more expensive than its competitors, due to the high production cost.
The first 672 units were only delivered in 1972. The energy crisis of the following year, however, compromised the car's success, and only 3, 925 units left the Arese factory until 1977.
