The rack-and-pinion steering came from the Triumph Vitesse and Girling disc brakes were used throughout. The Elan's engine was a highly modified 1498cc (later 1558cc) Ford Cortina, incorporating Lotus' own twin-cam cylinder head, and the gearbox and differential also came from Ford. Introduced in November 1964, the S3 featured numerous styling changes and improved brakes. With a kerb weight of just 689kg and a powerful Lotus-modified 1558cc Ford four-cylinder engine, the Elan's astonishing performance made supercars twice its price pale in comparison.
