Description

1932 Riley 9 Gamecock, an attractive sports tourer and one of 52 known survivors.

EG 286 is an original Gamecock, not a converted saloon, and was first registered in Peterborough on 11th March 1932. New for that year was the dropped chassis frame which allowed a much lower appearance and also increased interior space.

The Riley looks very smart in Nautilus Blue with contrasting red wheels and interior. The paintwork and leather seats are in excellent condition and the black double duck weather gear is new.

The Gamecock body features a large lockable luggage space in the tail and the windscreen folds flat to give a sporting appearance.

There is full weather equipment comprising hood, side-screens, tonneau and a hood bag.

The engine starts readily and settles down to a quiet idle showing good oil pressure. On the road it drives well with good steering and brakes. The gearchange is via a delightful short throw remote lever with a lock out on reverse.

Twin SU carburettors are fitted and the ignition is now via coil but using the magneto as the distributor.

This Gamecock spent some time in the north west of England and in 1969 was acquired by Joseph Lewis of Liverpool. In 1988 Mr Lewis passed the car to his son, John, who undertook a restoration of the car. Much work was done including the fitment of a new ash frame from Mike Stubbings and the body was re-skinned by John Pitney. There is a record of all the work done with the car.

Due to ill health Mr Lewis wasn’t able to complete the restoration and the car was bought by Malcolm Fishwick of Somerset who did much of the remaining work including painting the car before selling the car to Michael Eldridge in Kent and thence to the last owner who finished the car which including wiring, trimming and making new weather equipment including the hood frame. New headlights of the correct type have also been fitted.

There is good amount of history and invoices in the file together with a buff log book and maintenance manuals.

Rileys make an excellent choice for pre-war motoring being good all-rounders with tuning potential and strong support from The Riley Register and other specialists. They are also eligible for all VSCC events.

We will happily consider another classic vehicle in part exchange.
