1982 Lancia Montecarlo 2. 0 Pininfarina Coupe
Being sold from my private collection of Continental and Classic cars, as I have ultimately made the decision to sell off my entire collection inventory, including my Lancia Montecarlo Coupe.
The subject car, a 1982 Lancia Montecarlo Coupe, 2. 0 Twin Cam Series 2, now comes to the market for the first time since being acquired by the original owner, Mr Rabie of Pretoria.
Originally supplied by the then Lancia agent to South Africa, T. A. K. Motors of Johannesburg, Mr Rabie was very keen to tick off the options list on his new Montecarlo.
An expensive optional Bolletti air conditioner was optioned, beautiful anthracite black bovine leather seats and door cards, or as the catalogue listed “pelle bovina nero anthracite” these truly do compliment the car amazingly.
A four-speaker audio system with cassette tape deck, real high tech option for 1982!
Finally, my favourite option ticked, the rare and beautiful colour of “Blu Portofino Metallizato”
I have owned two red Montecarlo’s in the past, and as nice as a red Italian two-seater is, the blue metallic just brings the Monte’s shape to life. The colour simply highlights the mastery of the pen of Batista Farina, he really did design a beautiful and clean car, crisp and taught, very modern for the time.
Being a very low mileage car, that had only seen occasional use, and spent the most of its life being displayed in a private car museum, the Montecarlo is in near to new condition, zero rust or corrosion issues are present, as the car had always lived at 1800M above sea level, in the dry Highveld climate zone of Pretoria. All the external plastic trim has also remained perfect.
Since acquiring the Montecarlo, I have had numerous maintenance tasks performed;
• Cam belt and tensioner bearing.
• Water pump.
• Major service.
• Major tune up.
• Carburettor and fuel system clean.
• New 14-inch tyres (dated 2024)
• Brake system refresh.
• Cooling system flush.
The Montecarlo goes just as good as it looks, the handling and steering are very tight and direct, but maintains a light feel, remarkable for a car without power steering.
The Aurelio Lampredi designed engine has that typical Lancia Twin Cam rasp, it is eager to rev and pulls strongly up to fifth gear.
All the glass is original and unmarked, head and tail light lenses and fittings are also clean and present as new.
The body and paintwork are resplendent in its originality and condition, a dry and rot free car, that has evidently had tons of care in its lifetime.
Stepping inside the Montecalo's cabin, the remarkable aroma of genuine leather hide leaves you with an immediate sense of appreciation for how clean and well-kept it is.
The seats cosset the occupant, and are impressive in both form and function, the leather rimmed Momo steering wheel is also of just the right diameter with the stick shift gear and pedal position reaffirming the Montecarlo's sportscar aspirations.
The condition of the centre console and ventilation panels are near perfect, as is the dashboard top and fascia, hard to find even on cool weather Euro Montes, let alone cars from the dry African climate.
The woolen floor carpeting and the headliner are both clean and unmarked, as are all the other little components on the interior.
No signs of the common Montecarlo issue of sagging on the doors, they shut easily and have a MM perfect gap all round.
The front trunk area is also clean and neat, as would be expected of a car in this class.
The engine bay area and bonnet lining show very little wear, and still look as when new.
All hazard and emergency equipment are present, as is the spare alloy mag rim with original Pirelli tyre on. Having owned a Montecarlo twenty years prior to this one, I always missed that car, and could never find one as good again. Then I came upon this specimen, and it was love at first sight, not only was I in a Monte again, I was in an even better car!
Montecarlo's exude that “Baby Ferrari 308” look and feel, however, having owned both a 308 and a Montecarlo at the same time, the Montecarlo is the easier one to live with.
I find the Montecarlo is the lighter and nippier car, with more than adequate levels of power and grunt.
A great choice as a practical classic, being very reliable and able to keep up with modern day driving situations.
One of the very last available in this condition and specification, a rare right hand drive car at a realistic rate, the Montecarlo just makes sense.
