The model on display is part of the first generation, known as the T1. It's a particularly interesting and sought-after version, very bright thanks to its 21 windows and large sunroof. This Combi rolled off the German production line for the American market, and was delivered to Los Angeles, California. Its production plate indicates that it is a rare 7-seater microbus Deluxe Samba version and is fitted with original 12-volt power, separate front seats, six tilting side windows and trimmed in a velvet green colour with a grey interior. It left the dry, hot climate of Phoenix in Arizona to cross the Atlantic in January 2019, at the initiative of a collector from the south of France wishing to embark on a restoration project. A few months later, the project was taken up by its current owner, who undertook the work from the bare body with an epoxy treatment, respecting the original configuration. The upholstery, soft top, windows and seals were all replaced with new components. Model specialist Schmecko, based in Conflans, carried out the inspection and complete overhaul of the mechanical and electrical components, at a cost of nearly €15, 000 in June 2024. The invoice details all the work, including the replacement of the engine with a 1600 Volkswagen of industrial origin (with 100 hours under its belt) with a rebuilt gearbox guide, the replacement of the entire wiring harness with a switch to 12v, requiring a new ignition system and 4 new tyres.
This is a particularly rare and sought-after version of this now iconic vehicle. Its interior is particularly bright thanks to its 21 windows and its large sunroof are a real invitation to escape for 7 passengers. For more information on this vehicle, please contact us.
